Number of people living "Off the Grid?"?

Can someone please give me a reference where the number of people living "off the grid" is noted. I'm looking for a reliable source, not just a guess. Hopefully a link can be provided to the statistic as well! In this case, I consider "off the grid" as not being tied into the electricity grid. Thank you!!
