Can someone help me with the scarlet letter?
The author often uses names to symbolize something. Ex: Dimmesdale-hope diminished, Prynne-sin. In this case, Pearl means valuable. Hester traded her innocence and her social life, and was given a baby in return. She loves the letter, its her second parent (see the chapter at the brook-side). She is angry, because Hester was defined by her sin, and without it, Pearl no longer has either parents. Pearl is happy when Dimmesdale accepts her because that is showing that she is more important than his image. "Be true! Be true! Be true! Show freely to the world, if not your worst, yet some trait whereby your worst may be inferred!" pg 177 from my book.
