What exactly is the weak nuclear force of an atom?

I can deal with the strong nuclear force as being the "glue" if you will, that keeps protons and neutrons stuck together in the nucleus of an atom, but what about the weak nuclear force? What is it exactly? I don't really grasp the idea of the "fundamental particle responsible for mediating radioactive decay". Somebody, shed some lights on this please
